Not My Beautiful House

Last September, my husband and I were able to cross over the other side from owning our dream house to handing over the keys and title to another person to own and care for the property that we have so lovingly cared for over the past quarter of a century.   In simple terms, we sold our house in Bonny Doon, escrow closed.

Many people  commented on how fast it sold.   I kept wondering why they thought that. For us it had felt as thought it took longer than other homes we’d sold before.   Recently, a young woman shared with me that homes for sale in Reno were not selling as quickly due to the higher interest rate. We’d sold several homes before, so I felt like I knew what to expect; however selling our home in Bonny Doon was a whole different experience.  I think that is partially because it is a country home with its own well and septic system as opposed to city water and septic.  It was such a relief to have finally completed the sell of our home.

Despite the unexpected challenges of selling our home, it was clear that God was with us every step of the way.  From providing the perfect buyer despite the fact the real estate market has slowed down, help and advice from friends, the willingness and ability of our friend who was renting our place to move,

It took three trips, two U-Haul trucks and finally our personal vehicles, to deliver all our possessions to our home in Nevada, just across the California border from Truckee.  The first week we spent unpacking boxes piled high in the garage.  This past weekend we finally had the courage to tackle the large storage unit we’d rented.  We switched out the cute French table we’d bought on Facebook Marketplace a few years ago to use the Borkholder cherry dining table we’d bought for our Bonny Doon home around 1999, before we’d even remodeled our home there.   It was remarkable how much more our home here in Nevada felt more like home with the furniture we’d lived with in Bonny Doon for so many years.

Three weeks after selling our house, I went back to Bonny Doon for a visit and to celebrate my a milestone  birthday with friends.  It felt strange not to be able to hang out at our old place, as it is “Not My Beautiful House” any longer.
